AMERICAN CANYON — The county’s second largest city is pretty much free of gang activity because of community programs. That was the message at the Napa County Gang and Youth Violence Prevention Commission’s third meeting last week, the 26-member commission’s first in American Canyon.

American Canyon has long promoted itself as the “Gateway to the Napa Valley,” but now a new billboard next to city hall promotes the city as “The Gambling Capital of Napa County.”

American Canyon may have to spend as much as $7,000 to replace the roughly 1,000 ft. of copper wire snatched from Veterans Memorial Park sometime within the past week. A thief or thieves broke into a vault at the park, grabbing the pricey commodity.

AMERICAN CANYON — Citing a variety of concerns, American Canyon city council members turned a cold shoulder on a potential 300-unit apartment development on Newell Drive Tuesday.

The American Canyon Patriots Football & Cheer organization will hold sign-ups from 5 to 7 p.m. every Friday in June, starting June 1, at Mark’s Sports Bistro, 110 W. American Canyon Rd. Registration will also be held Saturday, June 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Big 5 Sporting Goods, 3485 Sonoma Blvd., in Vallejo.

AMERICAN CANYON — Thieves stole approximately 1,500 feet of copper electrical wire from the lighting standards at Veterans Memorial Park Monday night, according to Michael Throne, the city’s public works director.
