An interested fan would have to go back into the 19th century to find the roots of the Selangor Turf Club. Amateur race fans in the late 1800's got together to create a venue to enjoy their favorite sport, horse racing. In 1896 the club moved to Jalan Ampang and stayed there until it moved again to a new modern course where it is today in the Sungei Besi section of Kuala Lumpur.
This new facility is state-of-the-art and can entertain up to 25,000 cheering fans at any given time. Races run year round with the schedule for 2014 showing 31 race days; 19 Saturdays and 12 Sundays.
The 2,000 meter track is 30 meters wide, runs left handed, and is turfed with El-Toro Zoysia, a hearty patented grass that withstands the thundering hoofs time and again. Unlike most tracks in Malaysia or worldwide, the Selangor Turf Club course features off-camber turns with gradients that reduce centrifugal force and allow the horses to maintain higher cornering speeds, much like a motor race course.
