Colorado Lotto

The Colorado Lotto is a twice-weekly draw game available at lottery retailer outlets around the state. The game debuted in January of 1989 and was initially a weekly game with drawings held on Saturday. Wednesday drawings were added in the summer of 1990 and since then there have been two draws per week. The game costs one dollar ($1) per play and the minimum jackpot is one-million dollars ($1,000,000) if you choose the annuity. Players who opt for a cash prize in a single payment can expect their winnings to be about 50% of the jackpot. You'll need to be 18 or older in order to purchase tickets or redeem prizes. In 1992 a Boulder woman won the record jackpot of $27 million when she chose six (6) numbers correctly from the pool of forty-two (1-42).

There are four (4) separate prize categories and each relates to how many of your numbers match the winning numbers drawn. The amount you can win by matching three, four, five, or all six numbers will depend on the size of the prize pool and how many people claim prizes in each division. If you are the only person to pick 6 out of 6 numbers correctly (6/6) the entire jackpot will be yours. If more than one ticket holds the winning numbers the jackpot prize will be divided equally among all winners.

Be prepared for some fame and fortune even if you wish to remain anonymous. The Colorado Open Records Act requires lottery administrators to release details to the public such as your name, the town you live in, the game you played, and the amount you won.

How To Play Colorado Lotto

The Colorado Lottery does not offer online or telephone sales of lottery tickets. They do provide a mobile app for players which includes many game tools allowing you to check your scratch or draw tickets, save your favorite numbers, find the closest retailer, enter second-chance drawings, and to stay up-to-date on new games and notices about special events.

The game consists of forty-two (42) numbers (1-42) and players can pick six (6) for each lottery play they buy. Each play slip has ten (10) separate "boards" on it. Purchase and play 1-10 games per slip. Mark the numbers yourself or check the Quick Pick (QP) box to let the computer pick random numbers for you. The odds are the same either way. Alternately, you can simply ask your retailer for a Quick Pick and tell them how much you want to spend.

If you like to play a lot and don't want to have to run to the store twice a week to get your tickets, the Colorado Lottery has an option for you. You can purchase tickets for up to 26 drawings (13 weeks) in advance by checking the Advance Play box to play the same numbers over and over again.

Sales for the drawings stop between 7:30 p.m. and 7:33 p.m. while the draw is being held and certified and resume again immediately. However, the sales system is taken offline from 11:59 p.m until 4:30 am Monday through Saturday and until 8:00 a.m. on Sunday for "system balancing".

How To Win Cash Prizes

All six (6) of your lucky numbers will need to match the winning numbers in order to win the jackpot. Lotto has lower paying prizes for matching fewer numbers with the lion's share of contributions going into the top prize. If you prefer a slower-growing jackpot and more mid-range prizes, you may want to try playing Colorado Cash 5.

If more than one person holds a winning ticket with six out of six (6/6) matching numbersmatches all six numbers, the jackpot will be shared equally among all winners. When all six winning numbers for the draw go unmatched, the prize pool is rolled over until the next draw and grows bigger with each new Lotto ticket sold. As the jackpot grows bigger, more people play and that makes the top prize grow even faster! You can also win if you match five, four, or even three numbers out of the six you choose.

The prize for matching three (3) numbers rarely grows to more than a few dollars. The cash award for matching four (4) or five (5) numbers depends on total sales for the draw period and how many people match those numbers. Based on history, in general, you can probably expect to win between $30 and $50 when the jackpot is between $2m and $4m when you match four numbers (4/6) and between $300 and $600 when you match five (5/6). These statistics illustrate that the Colorado Lotto really is a jackpot game!

What Are My Odds of Winning?

Prizes in the Colorado Lotto game equal fifty percent (50%) of overall ticket sales. While they don't break down the odds for each prize division, they do reveal that the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 5,245,786, and the overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 35.
