Guide To The Virginia Lottery

The Commonwealth of Virginia sold their first Lottery ticket on September 20, 1988 and has since built a remarkable reputation for integrity, excitement and enormous prize winnings. For the fiscal year 2007, players of the Virginia Lottery have been awarded approximately $791.8 million in cash prizes. Proceeds from the Virginia Lottery go to the state's K-12 public schools, accumulating a phenomenal average of $1 billion every 6 six years.

Virginia Lottery Games
The Virginia Lottery consists of seven different lotto games players can buy tickets for, each with their own rules, cost and jackpot amounts. Virginia Lottery games include the Mega Millions, Win For Life, Cash 5, Pick 4, Pick 3, Scratchers and Fast Play Bingo.

Virginia Lottery - Mega Millions
The Mega Millions Lotto gives players nine different ways to win, with eight prize amounts. The jackpot prize, starting at $12 million, has reached as high as $300 million in the past. To play, you can either fill out a slip with your own numbers or choose Easy Pick to let the machine choose for you. Players (or the lotto terminal) select 5 numbers from 1 through 56, followed by a 6th Mega Ball number of 1 through 46. Each ticket (6 numbers) cost $1. Drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday at 11pm, with 12 states participating.

Players will also have the option of Cash Value or Annual Payments. Cash Value awards approximately half of the total jackpot amount (except for taxes) in one payment. Annual Payment awards the entire jackpot amount (except for taxes) in equal annual payments over a period of 26 years. Players may purchase Advanced Draw tickets, choosing the date they wish to play, or Multi-Draw tickets to play consecutive draws.

Prizes range from $2 for matching only the Mega Ball and $3 for 1 regular number plus Mega Ball, up to the full jackpot for matching all 5 regular numbers, plus the Mega Ball number. Note that the Mega Ball number selected must be the Mega Ball number drawn to win the jackpot. Match 5 regular numbers without the Mega Ball to win $250,000.

Virginia Lottery - Win For Life
Win For Life lives up to it's name, awarding jackpot winners $1,000 every week for the rest of their life. There are eight ways to win with six prize amounts available. The player select 6 numbers, 1 through 42, or choose Easy Pick and the lotto terminal will randomly select the numbers. Tickets cost $1 each. Choose Multi-Draw to play up to 26 consecutive draws, or Advance Draw to select a specific draw date.

Drawings are held every Saturday and Wednesday at 11pm. Seven numbers are drawn - first 6 numbers, then a 7th "Free Ball" number. Matching the first 6 numbers awards the jackpot prize. Matching 6 numbers including the Free Ball awards a cool $52,000. Match any 3 numbers to win the smallest prize of $2.

Virginia Lottery - Cash Five
The Cash Five drawing awards up to $100,000 for a $1 wager. This Virginia Lottery game allows players to choose how much the wish to wager on a single set of numbers - $0.25, $0.50 or $1. Each ticket must equal at least $1, meaning players can play up to 4 sets of numbers for $1 at $0.25 wagered per set. Players select 5 numbers from 1 through 34. Again, players can choose Multi-Draw to play consecutive draws on the same ticket. Drawings are held twice a day, every day.

Match 3 of 5 numbers to win 5x the wager amount (wager $1, win $5 - wager $0.25, win $1.25). Match 4 of 5 numbers to win 100x the wager ($1 wager wins $100). Match all 5 numbers to win 100,000x the wager ($1 wager = $100,000 - the maximum prize).

Virginia Lottery - Pick 4
This Virginia Lottery game lets players choose a 4-digit number, from 0000 to 9,999. Choose Easy Pick for the lottery terminal to select at random. Match the 4-digit number exactly with a $1 wager to win $5,000. Players can wager $0.50 or $1 per 4-digit number. Multi-Draw allows for up to 78 consecutive draws on a single ticket. Drawing are held twice a day, every day. (Note that it is possible for an Exact Order 4-digit number to sell out. The Virginia Lottery will only sell 1,200 tickets for the same 4-digit number.)

There are several ways to play a Virginia Lotto Pick 4 ticket - Exact Order, Any Order, 50/50 and Combo. Exact order means you are wagering that the chosen 4-digit number will be drawn in that same order, awarding the highest prize of $5,000. Any Order awards a lower prize, but will win so long as the numbers match, no matter the drawing order. Any Order pays between $200 and $1,200 for a win. 50/50 wagers split a $1 wager - $0.50 to Exact Order, $0.50 to Any Order. If Exact order is drawn, the player wins 50% of the prize, $2,500. 50/50 tickets pay between $100 and $600 for Any Order, $2,600 to $3,100 for Exact. (Exact order total includes the Any Order prize that comes with it.)

Combo tickets offer many more ways to win the big prize. Combos play the 4-digit number in each possible exact order, from 4-Way, 6-Way, 12-Way to 24-Way. Each Way is an additional $1, as the number is being played in another exact order. 24-Way Combos play every possible exact order combo. Winning combo tickets always payout the highest prize of $5,000.

Virginia Lottery - Pick 3
The Pick 3 Lotto games is played much like Pick 4, except only a 3-digit number is selected, 000 through 999. Players can wager $0.50 or $1 per 3-digit number, winning up to $500. Drawings are held twice a day, every day. To play both the Day and Night draw on a single ticket, select both Day and Night. Selecting Multi-Draw will only play consecutive draws for the time(s) chosen, Day, Night or Both. Again, there is a Sell Out limit on how many Exact Order tickets can be sold for a single 3-digit number, capped at 16,000 tickets.

There are several wagering options in this Virginia Lotto game - Exact Order, Any Order, Pairs and Combo. Exact Order awards $500 for a $1 wager, $250 for $0.50 wagers. The ticket only wins if the 3-digit number matches the drawn numbers in the exact order drawn. Any Order tickets pay $80 or $16, winning so long as the 3 numbers match in any order. Pairs allow the player to choose 2 numbers and the position they will be drawn in, First Two, Second Two or Split (First and Third). Pair tickets must be drawn in the order and position the ticket was played in order to win, awarding $25 or $50. Combo tickets can be purchased in 3-Way or 6-Way, depending on the 3-digit number. For example, "556" only has 3 possible exact order combination, making it a 3-Way - "567" has 6 possible combination. Each Way cost $1 (Combo 6-Way = $6). A winning combo ticket always the max prize of $500.
