Quarterback Gunner Kiel topped Notre Dame's 2012 recruiting class of 16 freshmen announced Wednesday along with a high-profile transfer -- running back Amir Carlisle, who left Southern Cal after a single season to join the Irish. Kiel, from Columbus, Ind., initially committed to Indiana, then to LSU and changed his mind again and decided to go to Notre Dame.

Notre Dame signed 17 players to national letters of intent Wednesday, but no one made more of a splash across the Internet than quarterback Gunner Kiel. It wasn't easy to secure the services of the 2011 Indiana Mr. Football, but the process doesn't matter to fans or coaches, as long as you get the guy in the end.

Let's all do ourselves a favor and not debate whether or not Gunner Kiel should or shouldn't be at Notre Dame. All that matters is that he's there and that what's done can't be undone. Check that; what's done can't be undone for a third time . All that matters now is exactly how Kiel fits into the Fighting Irish's plans, and that's an entirely different debate. Rumors swirl that Gunner Kiel has chosen to back off his commitment to LSU and instead chosen to go with Notre Dame.
