The front desk people were not organized and not helpful. not only were they very unfriendly, but they were rude. I probably could have found a better hotel for the same money in a location closer to the center of town. The food and soft drinks were very expensive and there weren't any cafes or stores nearby. $* for a small bottle of water or a soda is outrageous. I would not recommend this hotel in Amsterdam.

The HEM hotel is located somwhat between Centraal station and Schiphol. Sure it's easy to get to but morning connections are commuter strength- meaning full tram cars. Location was about 20 minutes from Dam with street parking (and contruction) and an attached parking lot for guests with cars. Our tram operator even called out "HEM hotel" on the #2Tram upon arrival arriving at Westlandgracht. A five minute walk and you're there right around the corner of the firehouse. Easy check-in, key worked and workable everything. The TV system seemed sparse with few choices and a funky remote. Heating system could barely keep up with cool temps -4C outside and ran all night.

Just right at the price. Tram is nearby also has some shops nearby the hotel. Snack bar and small restaurant at hotel were decent. I would stay there again if I have another opportunity to go to Amsterdam and they still offer at the same price.

We chose the HEMs because our flight left early the next morning. My husband wanted something clean, but reasonable in price. It was located in a dark, off the road location. Thankful the taxi driver knew of it. It was in a courtyard with trees which made it difficult to see the front. We walked up to the front and entered. It appeared like it was a neighborhood roominghouse, by the night or week. The room was dimmly lit, no faceclothes. I was afraid to try the shower. After calling the desk, we turned on the heat with a remote control. It felt like something you read about in a book. Had I been alone, I would have left. I would not reccommend this location to any of my friends. Quality is at the bottom. I rate it as a one.

I just returned yesterday from a 4-night stay in the HEM hotel in Amsterdam. I stayed by myself having 'saved' several hundred dollars NOT staying nearer the Centrum. My friends stayed at a Hilton ("no surprises") and at the Tulip Inn ("adequate") both of which were more convenient to the Bulldog where we started our days using their free WiFi - because it's quite fast. Back to the HEM - I arrived at 8:30am well before the 2:00pm checkin so I was given the code to the luggage check room - glad to say my bag was apparently untouched. Check-in went fine - be prepared for a local tax charge mine was * euros for the 4 nights. The room is neat and clean but dark - think 70's era Best Western. The room I got was a handicapped room - meaning no bathtub - but the funny thing is you have to step UP to get into the bathroom. The bathroom shows evidence of something being ripped from the door jamb, the tile floor could have been cleaner and the toilet paper dispenser was faulty (housekeeping fixed it my 2nd day). The electical converter I bought for my phone would not plug into the round outlets. PROS - I had two meals at the hotel, the food is not fancy but fresh and tasty. My room had two narrow single beds pushed together - mattresses OK, pillows very good. Free TV was OK if you have French otherwise the BBC channels don't work. The #2 tram ride is a short 3 block walk costs E* takes you directly downtown. Staff is brusque but professional. The neighborhood feels safe to me. For the price I would stay again but not for a short stay.
