I understand that hotels in resort towns on the Carribean are almost never as good as you think they will be but I have to admit, Almirante was a major let down. The location of the hotel seems nice from far away but when you get there, you realize the area is run down. Maybe Cartagena isn't what it used to be as a tourist destination and so it isn't well maintained but the roads and sidewalks were poor, the beach was very dirty, and you didn't get the feeling that this was a safe area. To avoid the beach, we decided to try the hotel's pool. Unfortunately, it is small and badly designed. There are only 2 depths, 35" (0.75m) which is okay for kids above a certain age and 59" (1.5m) which meant that anyone shorter than 5' 9" would have to stand on their tip toes or just keep swimming. You couldn't just relax in the pool. The hotel staff was average at best. Front desk does not bother to tell you that if you want to use the very old safe in the room, you will have to ask for a key for it which means you have to return to the front desk a second time and wait on line again. It took more than 30 minutes for the bags to be brought up to the room which is annoying when you want to just get out and go. The water pressure (13th floor) was very low, so taking a shower was more frustrating than relaxing. Some of the towels were old and stained. The furniture and fixtures were old and tired but the bed was reasonably comfortable. Breakfast was not bad. One lady in particular made an excellent omlette. Free internet access was nice.

This hotel is one of the nicest in Bocagrande. Hotel staff was very nice and friendly. Food in the restaurant was very good. A little pricey, but very good. The rooms could use some updating, especially the bathrooms. Temperature control in the room was a little bit of an issue. All and All I was very satisfied with my stay.

Cartagena is very hot and humid during the summer months. Shorts, sandals, and loose clothing is recommended. Cartagena is a tourist city and a strict dress code is not expected nor enforced. The hotel location is excellent, 15 min. drive from the airport (for personal safety I had a cab pick-up arranged thru the hotel for 21,000., Colombian pesos), 10 min. cab ride to the walled city (5,000. Colombian pesos), and accross the street from the beach. I found posted reviews to be accurate as to the insistence of vendors on the beach and the street. It can be annoying, like flyes around your food (apt metaphore), but Colombian people are generally, and overwhelmingly, peaceful, respectful, and polite. The only shortcoming I found with the hotel, and also covered in a posted review, was the pool size and limited available lounge chairs. However, the staff's excellent service makes-up for it. The concierges are very helpful with general information and booking tours. One of them, Juan Carlos, is particularly memorable for his attention to detail and professional demeanor. He was also recognized in a posted review. Colombia has improved greatly during the past four years. Colombia is much safer and the standard of living has risen. Flat screen T.V monitors are in elevators and everyone seems to hold a mobile (for us cellular) phone in hand (for 250 pesos per minute you can rent mobile phones from street vendors to make local calls). As such, Colombia is not as inexpensive as it once was. However, compared to the European market, you can't beat it. Please remember to advise your credit card companies and bank of your travel so your plastic won't be cancelled (anti-fraud software). The hotel staff will suggest you exchange at currency exchange places for a better rate. Enjoy!
