My husband and I just came back from staying two nights at the "Royal" Splendide which was anything but splendid or royal. Don't be fooled by the pictures - it claims to be 5 star - but 3.5 at best!! We were promised a king bed in writing from the manager and were given this tiny dark room (no window in the bed area!) I pulled out my copy of the email confirming a king and they tried to convince me that THIS was a king bed! Then they said they had no other rooms except one on the first floor. It had two single beds pushed together. We had just come off a 17 day mediterranean cruise and could NOT believe that this is where we were going to spend our last two nights. We agreed begrudglly as it was an improvement over the jail cel we were . Within 5 minutes we heard scraping noises and gushing water in the walls -no exageration. I zipped up my suitcase and we said we were not going to accept this room. There were two miserable, (who I will not call gentlemen) at the front desk. One man said that you get what you pay for and that we should have booked a more expensive room. We booked through web - Can you imagine hearing this? My husband managed to "find" a new room with "alas" a real king size bed but you still heard every movement in the surrounding rooms including running water each time someone flushed/showered, walking overhead at 3:30 am, etc. The bed was like a rock hard slab. We asked for a padding night 2. Honestly, there is no exaggerating in this summary! Lesson learned - don't take a non refundable rate.

The Splendide Royale has a great location; quiet, across the street from the beautiful and restful Borghese Park, near Spanish Steps, Via Veneto, and Borghese Museum. Wonderful breakfast overlooking park, with great coffee, fruit, eggs and meat. In Rome it is NECESSARY to be in a place with peace and quiet which this hotel allows. The 20 minutes distance from the crazy loud and crowded Pantheon area is worth a mllion dollars

The hotel was perfect. The location was superb and the staff very friendly and helpful. The room and bath were spacious and well appointed. The breakfast was great but the rooftop dining room in the evening was way over priced. I highly recommend this hotel.

THE HOTEL IS BEAUTIFUL, LOCATED NEAR SITES AND NICE SHOPPING AREA. HOTEL PERSONAL WERE VERY, VERY FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL. THERE WAS A TRAIN STRIKE THE DAY WE WERE TO LEAVE AND GO SOUTH TO NAPLES, THEY IMMEDIATELY STEPPED IN AND GOT US FLIGHTS OUT. THE HOTEL PEOPLE ARE THE BEST. BREAKFAST IS ALSO GREAT. I WOULD DEFINITELY STAY AT HOTEL SPLENDID ROYAL AGAIN!! A 4 STAR RECOMMENDATION FROM ME.
