A premium location on Central Park South, the Essex House met or exceeded my expectations, and I would definately stay again. Service, lodging and amenities are all top tier. None of this comes cheaply, but you do get what you pay for and I consider the Essex House a good value.

Our room was fine and the location was lovely. However, we encountered 2 problems. Problem #1: we exited the hotel on our first night to head to dinner and were couple #3 in a taxi line manned by the doorman. The doorman seemed far more interested in chatting it up with friends in various cars as they went by than hailing cabs. He was finally successful in hailing a cab for couple #1 but apparently their fare wasn't long enough for the cabbie who quickly departed. Doorman didn't ask us -- we were headed to Brooklyn! Couple #2 got fed up and left. 15 minutes into the mission we tried to talk to Doorman who promptly became rude and argumentative actually telling us to go in and complain about him. We did go in and another hotel employee did secure us a cab but it left us feeling truly horrible heading to our dinner. Problem #2: rhythmically banging water pipes until 2;30am at which time we brought it to their attention and they allowed us to head to sleep in another room. The transition to that room was time consuming, not smooth and resulted in a horrendous night's sleep. They said they knew there was a problem but couldn't fix it. Then why not let us know and give us the option to move to another room early in the evening?? There are SO MANY hotels in NYC, why stay somewhere that does not give you proper service and leaves you feeling tired and deflated??

I have had the pleasure of staying in a few exceptional hotels and I would rate this one as one of my best experiences. My daughter and I just returned from our first visit to the city. We booked a park view and was upgraded to a larger room with a city/park view. The staff was excellent and made us feel very special. Yes, anything you eat or drink at the hotel or in NYC is expensive just be prepared. Don't even open the fridge in the room to temp yourself! The big screen tv, the lighting under the sinks and night stands for during the night is wonderful (I want it at home now!) Surf the various travel sights for a few days at odd hours...you may get this room for a very reasonable rate. Worth working it a bit! Beds and pillows are the best!
