My wife and I had the best time at this hotel. We were amazed at the staff both for their work ethic and for their attitudes. The food was very good if you like buffet type food their specilaty resturants were excellant but you have put in your reservation the day before. We got to know our Sports and Activities group and they keep you busy thru out the day. We had a day that the weather was lousy but we were busy all day with one activity or another. We plan on staying there again on a yearly basis.

To be fair I would say this hotel is really is a 31/2 star hotel. Having stayed at hotels like the Ritz Carlton, Four Seasons, and Manderin Oriental I really can see the differance. Service at check in was so slow It was mildly painful. The way the hotel books dinner reservations is out of date and borderline hostile. The young lady taking reservations is not very helpful or accomidating, you can't book same day reservations? Another service fault lies in trying to get change or exchange currency at the front desk,This task requires extreme patience, possibly leaving your first born child, and a passport?. Don't ask I don't know! Hotel positives; Clean, good lunch and dinner buffet, there are no private tables or a bottle of wine left on the table after asking. I would say probanly the best thing about this hotel was the price. But you will lose service, So in the end the decision to stay at this property should be decided on what you value more, cash or service. Not a bad place to stay, but the staff could use some lesson's on customer service.

The Riu Palace Las Americas far exceeded my expectations! The service was phenomenal and the staff was very friendly and accomodating. the rooms were beautiful, but the beds were very hard and the room seemed quite humid. the food was pretty good...not the same as American food, but that is to be expected. the buffet and Steakhouse restraunt were especially good. The drinks were fantastic and bartenders were very attentive! The grounds were well kept-up and it has a great sandy beach area. The location of this hotel was also good as it is within walking distance to shopping and has bus-stops nearby. We may not return to Cancun, but we will definitely stay at a RIU in the future!!

I've been to Mexico about 10 times and I would put this place in the top 3 for location, food, and appearance. Went in Jan 2011 so was 60-70% full, busy and energetic but not overcrowded. The layout is different here than other Mexican resorts I've been to but actually pretty cool. The beach is very close to the hotel with minimal walking between the lobby, the pool, and the beach. Generally there's quite a distance between the hotel and the swim up bar and the beach so oceanview isn't a huge advantage. Here, we upgraded to an oceanview on the back wall and fell asleep to the waves crashing every night because the water was so close. It was awesome. The food was pretty good here...standard Mexican resort buffet...need to lower your expectations for quality but a vast selection. The specialty restaurants were quite good. Had steak and shrimp one night and japanese another with a wide variety of sushi. We tried a couple different dishes and was never disappointed. The Italian place for lunch is also good and breaks up the monotony of the buffet. The hotel is in a great location because only 5 minute walk from the club/bar scene...Coco Bongo and The City. Be prepared to be molested by every dude on the street trying to get you in their bar...nothing too scary if you're a guy but I imagine it would be intimidating for a group of girls. Your cab fare should only be $* from the airport...don't pay more like we did on the way in. Not a lot of kids running around. It seemed very couple and group oriented but that may have been more of the timing of when we went.

We booked a last minute weekend away to escape the bad weather and stress at home. This was just the place. The hotel was so clean and the staff were ready to get you anything you needed and were always friendly. Our room was comfortable and spacious. Our goal was to sit on the beach and relax and this was perfect for that. Food was good, but we only ate at the buffets as we did not bring dressy clothes. Access to drinks (liquor and mixers) in the room was great, and something you don't get at other hotels.
