I reserved a nonsmoking room at the Portland Airport Howard Johnson for my parents in February. They were disappointed to discover that the room they were placed in reeked of cigarette odor. When you are hundreds of miles from home and without your own transportation, what do you do? Needless to say, none of us is likely to stay at another HJ anywhere in the country again.

One of the best rates in town, if you get the special rate. Everything was great except the lumpy pillows and the industrial fan noise that was coming from the roof all night. Breakfast was a little sparse, doughnuts, cold cereal, juice and coffee. The heater unit could use an update too.

All in all the staff is pretty good, nice and hospitable. The rooms I've stayed in, (3x), were all right next to one another felt like they were reserved for discounted reservations. Clean and quiet, I don't eat processed foods so I can't comment on the breakfast. I'm not sure why they have a pool- does it really get warm in the NW? If I have to travel to that part of Portland again I will stay there, why change something that isn't broken. Oh, they use horrible amounts of air fresheners in the hall ways, its really bad, like if you ever knew someone who drove an IROC back in the 80's. Bring your own pillow. Really, bring one if you can or ask for two extra when checking in.

I was coming to Portland just for the weekend, and was looking for an inexpensive, clean, quiet, safe place to stay. I was MORE than pleased with Howard Johnson's! It was just minutes away from the Portland airport, and also just 2 miles from the location of my weekend seminar. The desk staff were extremely courteous, immediately responsive and helpful; the room was perfectly adequate for my needs. I wasn't looking for a honeymoon suite, after all! The only negative I could choose would be their "breakfast". <shrug> Very carb-heavy, unfortunately, with little fresh options. But that wasn't what I'd chosen the location for and a 7-Eleven was literally around the corner where I could get fresh fruit and water. Also, there was a restaurant on the premises, but my itinerary didn't provide a need for it. I was VERY pleased, and wouldn't hesitate to go back.
