Where does one begin with this place? I have to travel to Jamaica almost 1-3 times every month for business. I normally stay at Secrets (Highly Recommended), but due to the last minute nature of my trip, I was forced to stay at Sunset. I wish I could give a rating of 0 or 1/2 star to this place as it deserves it! First - I booked the resort on THEIR website...I had a choice of several different rooms, so I choose an oceanfront KING - not a double. When I got to my room I was dismayed to find it a double. I called to the front desk and was told that "room requests can't always be confirmed. I stated that this wasn't a request that I had booked this specific room via the website - the front desk decided to get an attitude and told me "well that's the room you've been assigned and there is not a king available" to which I immediatly went down to the front desk and proceeded to show them the confirmation email on my phone from THEIR website stating the type of room that I had booked and confirmed. The manager then came out and apologized and stated that travel agents always over promise. I stated "this wasn't a travel agent, it was your website - your company" and he answered me stating that the website was ran by a travel agent. I stated "but even so, it has your name on it and you are ultimately responsible for what they are SAYING" The best he could do was move me the following day, to which I agreed to do as there was no recourse. Room Quality - OLD - the towers were obviously built in the 60's, and have had minimal to no upgrades since then. Furniture and fixtures in the rooms are ancient and show extreme wear. Bed Quality was laughable (extremely uncomfortable and the mattresses are probably 15-20 years old). I was afraid to sleep in them for fear of bedbugs or some other affliction. Internet is ONLY available at the internet cafe or in the lobby for a fee of 5 dollars an hour at a VERY low speed (I'm talking dial-up quality here). The TV was a 13 inch job from 1995, but at least there was satellite TV. The only really good thing I can say is that the A/C worked quite well and made the room actually chilly and I had to turn it down. All-inclusive - if you consider all inclusive as water (non-bottled), juice, soda, and a buffet to choose from then maybe you would be pleased....after having stayed at other all inclusives, this one is a sham! You have to pay for almost EVERYTHING else at this joint. The other restaurants are a la carte, meaning get out the credit card or the cash! Location - for me the location is good as I work a quick 5 minute drive away. Beach/Pool - I don't normally go to the beach or the pool on my business trips, but I was so blown away by the horrible quality (and the other people - Americans included who felt that this place was some sort of nirvana) that I had to check it out...be surprised...lots of children running around (in fact there is a childrens water park), but there's also a Clothing Optional Beach...which confuses the HELL out of me...Is this resort catering to Families or Hedonistic adults...Unsure still. I do know that this resort seems to be ran by Europeans - and as such it has the quality of a "standard" European hotel. I've travel to Europe, and only stay at International chain-style hotels. I have a feeling that the Sunset would be the type of hotel you would get in Europe if you stayed at the "royal windsor arms" or the "der boarding house" - something just slightly superior to a youth hostel. End of the story...I will NEVER stay here again, and refuse to even go to Montego Bay if this is the only hotel available. Spend the extra money (not much extra by the way) and go to Secrets, which is 1/4 mile away...much better in EVERY aspect!!!!!!

Having been to Jamaica 23 times we have never encountered such rude staff. We were a groupof 40 adults and children so we had a great time regardless but we all agree we will never return to sunset resorts. The Bartenders Front desk and Gift shop staff need to be trained in people skills. If you asked for a drink or ask a question they made you feel so uncomfortable like you should apologize for bothering them. Actually I found myself saying Im sorry. How crazy is that. I arranged this trip for 10 families and I am apologizing for asking for a drink. We did run into some staff from sandals that work there now and they seem to be yet so pleasant. Also I would like to compliment the waiters housekeeping and playmaker staff. Some may say did you try to tip. Many Jamaicans have received tips from us but it was for good service not pay and you shall receive. On previous stays in Jamaica the Bartenders sing dance joke and make you feel so comfortable you feel like they are family. Everything is ya mon no problem mon. Not at this resort. Had this been our first trip to Jamaica it would have been our last. Some other minor complaints would be it would be nice to have some sort of clock in the room. I was told by staff you can call for a wake up call but I would like to know when I wake if it is 12am 4am or 6am. Or if we are getting ready for dinner what time it is. I was Afraid to turn on cell phone and receive text while in Jamaica. #40can get expensive#41. So yes some kind of time in the room would be nice.

This hotel gives you the most for your money, you should never go hungry the food is excellent I never expected this kind of food, the drinks are all free and they provide a free shuttle at night to take you to Margaritaville. The hotel is also secured from outsiders and it is right next to the hotel Secrets. My only concern with the hotel was that we couldnt leave the resort unless it was with a taxi because you would need a vehicle to go to downtown even though it is not far it is too far to walk. I would recommend staying in Negril if you're a younger couple that is not taking the children. The Sunset Beach Resort in Negril is very nice. This resort is much more for an older crowd and I am 28 yrs in case you were wondering.

although this was my second time here, I wont be back a third. While the first time(sept 09) was great, there were many issues this trip. Our romm was not ready until 3:30 and then we were se4nt to an occupied room. By the time we got our rooms it was 4:30. There was no information in the rooms about the hotel, meal times, etc. The knob in our bathroom did not work so I got locked in for 15 minutes. Food selections in the buffet ran out and were not replenished. If you were not at breakfast by 830 you did not stand a chance of getting any breakfast pastry. All of us were smokers, and the first day we failed to close our terrace door and got a notice about not smoning in rooms. So we made sure we never left the terrace door open from that point on. Upon chekout, we were told we had to pay a 500 fine per room because we smoked on the terrace. I have stayed in many non-smoking hotels, but have always been ablle to smoke on the terrace. I go to jamaica every 3 months, since my fiance is jamaican and I suppose the fine is woth losing 5000 or more in revenue. We will find somewhere else to stay in September.
