Situated right downtown and within short walk of the best restaurants. The restoration is still a work in progress and there's some rough edges like tattered blinds, 80s-era TVs & stands, but the owner/mgmt is making a nice effort with the old place. I can't really recommend for the business traveler, as there's no in-room internet at all, very few cable channels, and no workout facility, but for the leisure traveler it's just fine. Yes the rooms can be oddly shaped and the floors a little wavy, but it is a hundred or so year old building! The showers are new and the mattresses just fine. The free breakfast goes above and beyond the basic cold food found at the moderate chain hotels, and you can't beat the classic charm of the lobby and public areas, which are filled with works by local artists.

We booked online for 4 nights to attend a family function. We liked the idea of a quaint refurbished hotel within walking distance of the theater, museums and restaurants. We were very disappointed when we saw our small room. It was nothing like the picture with the canopy bed or the picture with the one double bed. There were no sheers at the window which limited privacy. Also our room was at the back of the hotel overlooking an alley and lots of fire escapes and junk. Where were the rooms overlooking the city? Also the room was dusty and had an unusual odor. We could not open the window as there was no screen. The carpet was spotted and old (maybe that was the odor). The dresser had some of the veneer missing. We checked in at 6 pm, went to dinner, had a cup of coffee at the Inn and went to our room to make reservations at another hotel and contact the online company. We were told we were checking out that we would have to pay for one night. We left at 9:30 pm. The cost of the 4 nights stay was $ and we were refunded $ online. Three and one half hour at this substandard hotel cost us $.

fantastic value and nice location. Everyone went out of their way. Aside from some late night street noise (unit 301) and an older matress, our night stay could not have been more pleasant.

THIS HOTEL IS LOCATED IN THE HEART OF A SMALL CITY ON IT'S WAY BACK. IT IS WITHIN FEET OF SOME OF THE BEST EATERIES IN TOWN. IT IS WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE OF AN OPERA HOUSE AND A CASINO. THE HOTEL HAS BEEN RENOVATED TO BE JUST THE WAY IT WAS MANY YEARS AGO--IT HAS ACCOMPLISHED THIS WHILE QUITLY HIDING THE NECESSARY MODERN AMMENITIES-SUCH AS A NEW ELEVATOR OR WI-FI IN YOUR ROOM. THE BREAKFAST INCLUDED FRESH PASTRY AND WAFFELS AND SAUSAUGE. THERE ARE TABLES OUTSIDE ON A PLAZA OR SIT INSIDE ON THE NEW 'COMFEY' SOFAS. IT'S A QUITE GET AWAY NEAR EVERYTHING YOU WOULD NEED OR WANT IN BANGOR.

The Charles Inn is supremely well-situated in the very heart of downtown Bangor. Rooms and lobby are full of antiques. The free continental breakfast was HUGE (and the concierge got up to have breakfast ready at 5 a.m. for those of us running the marathon!). Very friendly, comfortable, and affordable.
