Stay 4/14-4/18. 5th floor main building. Let me start off by saying that this hotel is a beautiful landmark, it's a SF must see. It's location is great being centrally located within walking distance to China Town, North Beach, the square, and best of all the famous SF Trolley stops are right in front of the Hotel. Also, it houses the Tonga room. Unfortunately, we were soon a bit dissapponted, as upon our arrival we were never greeted or helped with our bags. We read on their website that their concierge was the best in SF hotels for tourist guidance but when we asked for some help, the person behind the counter didn't seem as forthcoming with information. Check in was fast and easy but we entered our room, we noticed that one of the walls had a dark mark and when we looked up at the ceiling we noticed the paint and drywall peiling. Needless to say the room was in need of some major TLC. We didn't let that discourage us, after all we were staying at a landmark hotel! However, the next morning we woke up at 6 am to loud noises such as, banging of trash cans, slamming of doors, and to top it off a vacuum. We let that morning slide but it continued for the rest of the week!! I guess it's a no sleeping in policy at the Fairmont past 6 am. The cleaning crew will make sure of that. If you are used to or like waking up to loud noises every morning, than this is the place for you. With that said, I would only return to the Tonga room for drinks but not to the Fairmont for a stay. I would try the Mark across the street instead.

The Fairmont is know for there 5 start service and the quality of hotel. Although our room had a wonderful view of the upper deck garden we were missing the sheer drapes for privacy to enjoy the view. The suite adjacent to our room not only shared a door but we were able to share their conversations heard from the room. I guess my expectations from a 5 start hotel would of placed closer attention to the little details that you spend a nice price for. I did mention our situation to the hotel staff in the morning, we got a sorry and was dismissed. There are lots! of wonderful hotels in the city and I would consider others before I return to the fairmont.

The hotel check in staff and concierge was not helpful to me when I tried to get information about shuttle service and a place to eat a snack. I was given a paper but could get no explaination or help about the shuttle service. There was no place to get a snack on premises without getting a complete formal meal. I was tired and just wanted a bite to eat. My choice was reduced to room service that was also too much food for too much money! The tv was not in proper working order when I arrived and didnt improved through my stay.

If you are looking at the Fairmont as a possible hotel for your stay you will find a truly elegant, old charm, hotel. Staff is friendly, but service was not perfect. Checked in about 4;30pm. Not terribly late. For a Deluxe King we got the 2nd floor next to the elevator. There are 20+ floors in the tower. Room had a rollaway bed in the room. When I called for a room change they said none were available and rooms were still being made up if we were going to change. We could not wait for the room and put up with the elevator going up and down and the bing of the arriving elevators. Stay away from any "X10" room numbers on all floors. Oh yeah... Parking is over $55 per night...

We were paying about 1/2 price, but we were treated like royalty.

As beautiful a setting as any hotel in the world. The lobby was decorated so beautifully for the holidays, and there was ample seating, so that one could enjoy a drink and the people. Simply wonderful experience. The hotel staff were warm and courteous. It couldn't have been better.
