The people are great the location is great. The Hotel is very small (we had to climb over the beds to reach the airconditioner, and with 5 peole and two rooms we had to stack suitcases on top of suticases. Our rooms were clean but everything was tiny (Bathrooms, sinks, the chair for the desk did not fit between the deck and the bed so I am writing this sitting on the bed and using the desk.) No amineties for kids or adults. Parking is a good two blocks and a three story stairway away. The elevators will only hold the baggage cart sideways. In the kids room you have to go through the first bed area then around to the second twin bed area goung through the bathroom. This would be nice for a newlywed couple wanting to be together but for a large family it is just too small.

Several other reviews on here have noted that Hotel Alex Johnson was not very clean, with old bedding, carpet, etc. So I wanted to chime in and let people know that the extensive remodel/redecorate/updates that were begun in Nov. '09 have made a big difference in the quality of this hotel. My family stayed there in Sep. '09, and I would have to say the criticisms were valid at the time. Old smelly bedding, poor carpeting, strange odors. Our stay in June '10 was 180 degrees removed from all that. Everything about our room this time was just what you would expect from a modern hotel, fresh and crisp and very pleasant. So I would unreservedly recommend Hotel Alex Johnson to anyone, especially if you desire the downtown, city-style hotel experience.

This hotel is interesting from a historical perspective. It has lots of Native American artwork mixed with some older foreign decor. Located in the heart of downtown Rapid City it has a great location. Unfortunately, there are some downfalls. Parking is not available directly at the hotel. Instead, you park a block down the street and you can only park on the top level of the parking ramp. Additionally, you will encounter numerous people trying to beg you for money at all times of the day when walking down the streets. You will find great local shops to pass the time away just seconds away from the hotel. The rooms within the hotel are mediocre at best. They are in massive need of updating. The amenities within this hotel are minimal. No room services, no pool, no whirlpool, pretty much all you get is your room. The elevator are incredibly small and slow. The staff was very nice and friendly. Personally, I would not stay here again. We were fortunate to get a good rate on one of the best rooms in the hotel (which included a jacuzzi), otherwise, we would have looked elsewhere for our lodging needs after the first night. There are tons of bars surrounding this hotel. Again, I did not feel safe at all walking the streets after the 8 o clock hour. Stay at your own risk.
