What Was Once Great Is Now Average (and below in some cases)

I've stayed at the Mansfield once before in 2009 and had a great experience. My husband and I make a point to stay in only boutique hotels when visiting NYC and to stay somewhere different every time. But this time we wanted to stay at the Manfield again because of our previous positive experience. However, our most recent stay in April 2011 left a lot to be desired. We were both surprised to see how much had changed with the service in such a short amount of time. And to think that I spent extra money to get a larger room this time, but received less service & amenities than what I got in the smaller room last time. Here is a list of what disappointed us: 1. The doorman was at the door one (1) time during our entire 4 day stay. I mention this only becuase the huge glass doors are very heavy and are quick to close on you when you're trying to get your luggage in/out of the entrance. Plus it's nice when the doorman can catch a cab for you. During our 2009 stay, the doorman was there every time we entered and exited. 2. No more free continental breakfast. This was a big reason why we chose to stay here again (cheap meals in the city are hard to come by). When we arrived in our room the first day, we consulted the in-room amenity guide and menu book to confirm the free breakfast. The guide/menu clearly stated "free continental breakfast." So we went for breakfast the first morning of our stay and found that it was no longer free. Instead of looking like fools, we decided to just get a cup of coffee. Not even the coffee was free (which is even free in the guest lounge...but not at breakfast?). 2 cups of coffee = over $12 after tax! We brought our concers to the attention of the front desk attendant, to which she replied "Yes, we know it's still printed in the in-room menu. We just haven't changed it yet." Seriously? She didn't even offer apologize, much less to comp our coffees. Just a blank stare is all she provided. 3. No more bath robes. We had beautiful, comfortable bath robes perfectly folded and placed on our bed during our 2009 trip. They were M.I.A. this time. 4. There is no shelving in the bathroom anymore (with the exception of the shelf over the toilet that holds the extra rolls of toilet tissue and the free toiletries). So there is literally no space for you to lay out your toothbrush, toothpaste, cologne, cosmetics, etc. except on the floor or on the desk in the main room. 5. This may be ridiculous, but I feel it's important. In 2009, we had a live orchid on the desk in the room. This was a very nice touch and added great beauty and softness to the room's atmosphere. I guess maybe it got too expensive and they nixed those, too? 6. The housekeeping cart sat in the hallway from sun up to sundown. It usually disappered after 6pm. Mind you, the hallways are very narrow because it's an old building. And...every night the cart was wheeled away, the vacuum cleaner was left behind to trip over in the hallway. I made a point to post a glowing review after our 2009 stay, so don't think I'm posting this just because I was suddenly disappointed. I sincerely hope the management team at the Mansfield take note of the differences that have appeared over the past 2 years and work to improve upon them. Maybe it's a money thing and they just can't afford the robes, orchids, free breakfast, and doorman. Though I'm still in love with the historic qualities and architecture of the Mansfield, it saddens me to say that I seriously doubt I'll be staying there again.

elevator is too small 2 people and 1 suitcase at a time, plus it is slow. Rented 2 rooms both queen beds were great, one bathroom required you have your feet in the bedroom to sit on the toilet. People next door were smoking and staff did stop that immediately, other than that they were no help. Very close to everything we wanted to see. Has great coffee bar. Rooms were cold, but there is a bakery in one of the restaurants near by and every morning your room smells of warm bread. Great value would stay again, but make sure you love your roommate as you will be inches away from each other every second you are in the hotel!

This was our first stay at the Mansfield and, from the reviews posted here, we were expecting a pleasant hotel in a good location. The location was indeed good; the hotel however left a lot to be desired. In fact, it was probably the worst NY hotel experience I've ever had. Our initial room was so dark, cramped and forbidding (like a cell), we asked to be upgraded. The next room--which was significantly more expensive-- was more spacious with more light, but had a dark, dingy feeling and air conditioners that made such a racket it was difficult to sleep. With coarse bath towels, spotlights over the bed, and poorly functioning window blinds, the room was not a place I wanted to spend any time. The shabby lobby, inattentive reception (most of the time), and dark, dirty elevators only added to the overall dismal scene. To add insult to injury there was little or no cell phone reception in the room (requiring the use of the expensive hotel phoneline). I only wish I had booked into one of hotels down the street which are much more pleasant and luxurious -- and not at all more expensive. Never again for the Mansfield.
