MICHIGAN CITY — Doug Samuelson, the Michigan City Police Department K-9 officer, presented a letter to Common Council President Marc Espar at the conclusion of Tuesday night’s council meeting asking the city to reopen negotiations for raises for the Michigan City police and fire departments.

MICHIGAN CITY — In 2011, the Michigan City Police Department showed a 10 percent overall decrease in crime from the previous year, including a drop in all but one of seven categories the department is required to report to the FBI as part of its Uniform Crime Report.

MICHIGAN CITY — The La Porte County coroner’s office has determined that an 81-year-old man found outside of his Michigan City home Saturday is likely to have died from natural causes, although one of the causes is listed as hypothermia.

24-year-old arrested on burglary charge MICHIGAN CITY — Michigan City police arrested Jesse Kirby, 24, 566 S. Railroad Ave., on a Class B felony burglary charge Tuesday.

MICHIGAN CITY —- Five Michigan City firefighters and a La Porte County Emergency Medical Service paramedic were recognized for their part in attempting to save a life during a fatal accident near Indiana 212 and Tryon Road on Jan. 13. They were honored during the monthly Fire Merit Commission meeting Monday.
