Macao Casinos & Gambling

by World Casino Directory staff, special thanks to Martin Chua of Macau Casino World and David Small

Macau has played a unique and influential role in relations between China and the West, especially between the late 16th and 19th centuries. Macau is an ex-Portuguese colony off the Southern coast of China in Far East Asia. Macau was once famous for being an area thick with counterfeiters, spies and drug runners. Ironcially today Macau has legalized casinos and gambling -- and in fact Macau is Las Vegas, Nevada's biggest casino destination rival with experts saying Macau "Cotai Strip" could overshadow the Las Vegas Strip.

In the 21st century, Macau is standing on the threshold of a new frontier due to her special status within China as the only region where gambling is legal.

Stanley HoMacau reverted to the control of the Chinese in 1999 and in 2002 Macau took the gamble when the Chinese government decided to open up the gaming industry to operators outside Macau, effectively ending Stanley Ho’s 40-year monopoly. Stanely Ho is a billionaire and a long-standing friend of North Korea and the owner of a casino in Pyongyang.

The country of Macau is divided up into cities. There are 2 casino citys in Macau in which 26 legal casinos and gambling facilities are available. The strip of casinos in Macau is known as the Cotai Strip. Besides the city of Macau there are the islands of Taipei.

Sands Macau opened its doors in 2004. The Sands was the first U.S. owned casino in Macau and is operated by Steve Wynn. The Sands casino recouped its capital within the first year! Wynn Macau, another Western-style casino, will be opening for business this September. More exciting projects are underway along the Cotai Strip and by they year 2009, Macau will almost double the number of its existing casinos.

The Casinos of Macau

To hundreds and thousands of Asian casino devotees, Macau already is Asia’s very own Las Vegas. You will see in Macau the familiar bright exciting signs, nightlife, casinos, bars and basically one of the world’s largest parties. Some of the most popular spots are: Casino Lisboa, Galaxy Rio Casino, and the Sands Casino. Baccarat is the most popular game in Macao.

Macau casinos seems to attract the super-high rollers. While Las Vegas remains more family oriented, although as we all know there are high-rollers there, too, Macau really rakes in the “serious gamblers.”

Cotai Strip

The Cotai Strip is 1.8 miles of reclaimed land between Coloane and Taipa. Las Vegas Sands will own most of the Cotai Strip's hotel and casino infrastructure. The company will manage most of the casino space, while the company's hotel partners will manage their respective hotels and amenities. The hotel partners are:

The Venetian Macau
Four Seasons
Far East Consortium
Marriott, Ritz Carlton & Tang
Shangri-La and Traders
Sheraton and St. Regis
Hilton and Conrad
Fairmont and Raffles

The first phase of the Cotai Strip is scheduled to open this summer with the grand opening of the $1.8 billion 3,000 suite Venetian Macao, and construction or preconstruction activities have commenced on all of Las Vegas Sands’ seven sites on the Cotai Strip. Sheldon Adelson has said that when the Cotai Strip opens, most of the casinos on the peninsula - where Ho’s Lisboa and Grand Lisboa is located – “will be toast”. “When the entire Cotai Strip is open, the competitive battle will be finished”, Adelson told The Associated Press in an interview last year. I feel that the size is of gaming in Macau will cause the biggest problems as well as the biggest attractions;

The largest casino in the country of Macao is The Sands Macau which is located in the city of Macau. The Sands Macau Casino has 277 table games and 405 casino slot machines / video poker games (or other video terminal gaming machines).

Of the 26 gambling facilities in Macau most are casinos but pari-mutuel facilities are also available. Legally those are the only forms of gambling establishments you will find available in Macau. For pari-mutuel, you’ll find horse and dog racing tracks.

Summary of gambling and casinos in Macau:

Perhaps it is best said by Martin Chua of Macau Casino World:

Everyone is trying to get a touch of the sacred green felt here and strike it rich. Gamblers come to Las Vegas to be entertained. Here in Macao, gamblers, especially Chinese gamblers, step into a casino to challenge their destiny!

Is it really China's ambition to try and develop Macau casinos into a major tourist gambling destination far superior to the likes Las Vegas, Nevada and Atlantic City? Sure, wouldn't that be your ambition, too? Macau also has plenty of bars and nightlife in addition to the casinos. Macau itself is delightful town and fun for any tourist and vacationers.

Still think Macao can’t hold a candle to Las Vegas? Experts on the ground say, "look out!"
