MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) - Roman Catholic leaders in the Upper Peninsula say a 19th century bishop has been declared "venerable" by the Vatican. The designation means Frederic Baraga has been recognized for a life of heroic virtue. It's the first step in the process toward sainthood.

Evidence continues to pile up of cougars in the Upper Peninsula, with the latest sighting coming from Baraga County. But state officials say there is no evidence a breeding population of the animals exists.

SKANEE, Mich. (AP) - A cougar has been spotted in the Upper Peninsula's Baraga County. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources reports Friday that a photo of the big cat was taken May 5 near Skanee, northwest of Marquette.
