DIVI SOUTHWINDS RESORT in Christ Church is set to undergo a $130 million expansion, adding to the improved accommodation on the island's South Coast.
Divi Resorts vice-president Mark Steward told BARBADOS BUSINESS AUTHORITY that 300 new rooms would be added, along with better swimming pools.
"We have found there is great demand for Barbados from both the United States and British markets and we've decided it is time to make some new investment in the property," said Steward.
The vice-president added that over the past five years the resort had spent $10 million on renovating rooms and constructing a mini-golf course for the property in Barbados.
This, he said, had given great energy to the South Winds property but there was still a need for more accommodation.
Most of the new construction will be on beachfront property already owned by the resort and the hotel will remain open during the construction phase.
Steward said there was some movement towards condominiums in Barbados but tour operators were calling for more rooms to sustain business to the region.
"We are trying to grow our numbers in all the islands and Barbados is one of our key properties at this point," he said.
Steward also reported that his chain had a casino contract in St Lucia and was looking to operate a new property there in the 300- to 400-room range.
Divi currently operates 3 000 rooms across nine properties in the Caribbean. |
