VIEW: How it could look.A NEW upmarket casino complete with two restaurants and a live music venue is due to open in Manchester's Great Northern Warehouse in October, creating 350 jobs.

Manchester 235 will feature 14 roulette tables, 10 blackjack tables and a poker-room that will double as a conference room - as well as hosting live entertainment seven nights a week.

The £13m development is not affected by new laws controlling what casinos can be built in Britain because of its relatively small size and the fact its licence was granted before the recently-passed Gambling Act came into force.

Revolution

London Clubs International, the company behind the casino, said it was hoping to tap into a new generation of more sophisticated gamblers.

"Theoretically, you could walk into this establishment and not bet a penny," said chief executive Bill Timmins. "The problem we have had in the UK is that the industry is not allowed to advertise and so a lot of people might not know who we are or what we offer.

"All that is going to change with the new law. We believe we have already seen in Manchester, with the revolution in restaurants and so on, that we need to offer people a complete night out."

Manchester 235 will take up 46,000 sq ft of the Great Northern Warehouse, a grade II listed building which has not been completely occupied since it reopened in 2002 after a £72m makeover.

The two restaurants will be Italian Numero and the Modern British Linen and the live venue, called 235 Live, will show music and comedy.

Tourism

The new development was welcomed by tourism chiefs, who hope it will bolster Manchester's case to be awarded Britain's only licence for a huge Las Vegas-style "super-casino" at SportCity in east Manchester. The city is on a shortlist of eight possible sites, including Blackpool and London.

Andrew Stokes, chief executive of Marketing Manchester, said: "Manchester's cutting-edge individuality has allowed it to retain a competitive edge as a visitor destination.

"Manchester 235 is yet another example of the city's inspired creativity and is a welcome addition."

The government's reforms of Britain's gambling laws will allow not just the pilot super-casino but will also give the go ahead for eight "large" casinos, with up to 150 £4,000-jackpot slot machines, and eight "small" casinos, with 80 machines.

ARE you looking forward to the age of of the super-casino? Have your say.
