A.C. Boardwalk fire hits shops, casino commission
Associated Press
ATLANTIC CITY - A large fire destroyed nearly a block of storefronts yesterday on the Atlantic City Boardwalk, according to the Press of Atlantic City.
The fire struck near Ocean Avenue and the Boardwalk between the state Casino Control Commission offices at Tennessee Avenue and Resorts International.
Though the fire damaged part of the casino commission headquarters, gambling in the city should not be affected, a spokesman told the Associated Press.
No injuries were reported and it was too early to have a dollar estimate of the damages.
The fire destroyed a building across the street that housed retail shops, said commission spokesman Daniel Heneghan.
The commission's offices were to be closed today, and fire inspectors remained at the scene late yesterday afternoon, trying to determine whether the blaze had left any structural damage. The cause was under investigation as well.
Six large windows on the second story of the commission's building were blown out and smoke traveling throughout the building caused some problems, Heneghan said.
The fire damage "is actually minimal, aside from the windows. There was no charring of anything inside our building, but there is some debris around," Heneghan said.
About 160 of the commission's 330 employees work out of the building, Heneghan said. None was inside at the time. *
