A CASINO in Scarborough is to close with the entire workforce of about 25 staff losing their jobs.

The Grosvenor Casino next to the Grand Hotel will shut on July 31. Staff were told the news at a meeting on Friday afternoon and have been given two weeks' notice.

They have been offered other jobs at Mecca Bingo in Albermarle Crescent and other venues also owned by the Rank group.

No-one at Rank was available for comment over the weekend. But staff, who were given letters telling them about the closure, said they were "gutted".
One casino worker, who did not want to be named, said: "They said they have been running on a loss and decided they wanted to close. We have been offered jobs at Mecca in Scarborough or a transfer somewhere else within the group."

The member of staff said the meeting on Friday was attended by the regional manager and the human resources manager who had promised to speak to each member of staff individually to look at their future options.
The casino worked added: "Everyone is gutted about the two weeks' notice and it is out of order. You have to have worked there for over two years before you are offered a redundancy package. The majority of us haven't."
The London-based Grosvenor organisation – which is part of the Rank group – has owned the former Continental Sporting Club since 1995. Grosvenor bought the premises from Continental Casinos of Leeds. That group had run the club since 1979 after buying it from Goybella.

The Scarborough casino is one of 36 Grosvenor casinos across the country.
The decision to shut the Grosvenor casino in Scarborough coincides with a deal struck by Rank to sell and lease back 43 of its properties.
