Acushnet keeping eye on casino plans
August 03, 2007 6:00 AM
ACUSHNET — The selectmen on Monday night are expected to designate a board member to monitor Mashpee Wampanoag casino development issues in Middleboro, especially as they relate to potential impacts here.
Town Administrator Alan Coutinho attended a casino session in Lakeville last week where officials from throughout the region started thinking about what is unfolding in Middleboro, and what it could mean for their communities.
"We have a lot of vacant land in our northern reaches," Mr. Coutinho said. "I don't know how far the casino issue will reach in terms of providing housing for the employees. There could 5,000 to 10,000 employees with a 25 percent turnover every year. They might need land."
Mr. Coutinho says Acushnet has some natural assets and logistical features to protect. He says that if the Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods casinos in Connecticut are a fair example, the ripples of casino gambling could spread throughout the area.
"I think we have to participate in watching this and be prepared for what comes, doing this with the area communities," Mr. Coutinho said.
"I think the board will pick a representative Monday night." |
