Advertising for online gaming banned in UK

Posted on: August 10th, 2007 by Sandy Lee

An unexpected setback has hit the UK after the British government ruled that certain online gaming sites can no longer advertise their product or services in the UK starting from September this year. The ruling which was made within the last week is standardised and hits all online poker and casino sites based in offshore gaming hotspots such as Costa Rica and Belize.

The decision was based upon the opinion that offshore regulations in certain countries were not considered stringent enough, despite the fact that licenses have being properly issued. The Culture Media and Sports minister James Purnell offered no apologies for the unwelcome ban, due to concerns over standards.

The ban spans all forms of advertising media including newspapers, television and the internet. Firms that will suffer from the ban include Littlewoods Casino and Betfred. Gaming sites operating within the European Economic Area will be allowed to continue to advertise, alongside companies operating in low tax countries such as The Isle of man.

This means that big name operators such as 888.com, Mansion and PartyGaming will not be affected. Decisions are still being made with regards to companies based in Kahnawake and Antigua, which means that industry giants Bodog are still uncertain of their position.
