After Market Wins Del Mar Handicap
Pam and Marty Wygod's After Market, the 124-pound highweight and 2-5 favorite, exhibited his class today with a hard-fought but decisive triumph in the 68th running of the Grade II $250,000 Del Mar Handicap at a mile and three-eighths on the infield Jimmy Durante Turf Course.
Jockey Alex Solis urged the son of Storm Cat and Tranquility Lake to a three-quarters of a length victory over the fast-closing Runaway Dancer in 2:13.01 for the marathon distance.
It was a blanket finish behind the winner with Runaway Dancer, ridden by Aaron
Gryder, nosing out third-place Spring House, who in turn was a nose in front of fourth-place Toasted. Another nose back in fifth was Atlando. Completing the line-up of seven older horses were Bravo Maestro and Obrigado, both of whom had the lead at stages of the contest. Withdrawn from the original field was Global Genius.
After Market, victor in the nine-furlong Eddie Read Handicap July 22 at Del Mar, was scheduled to run in the Arlington Million two weeks ago. However, when the course at Arlington Park in Chicago was softened by rain, it was decided by trainer John Shirreffs and the horse's owners to run in today's Del Mar Handicap.
After Market, a four-year-old colt bred by the Wygods in Kentucky, earned $150,000 with his eighth triumph in a dozen starts and now has career earnings of $853,685. As a prohibitive betting choice, he returned $2.80, $2.20 and $2.20. Because of heavy wagering to show on After Market, there was a minus show pool of $25,411.
Runaway Dancer, the stretch-running eight-year-old who won the Sunset Handicap at Hollywood Park this summer, paid $5.40 and $3.80, while Spring House returned $4.60 to show.
Sunday's attendance was 16,627.
