AKWESASNE — The Akwesasne Mohawk Casino and Mohawk Bingo Palace will be merged into one site and expanded under a new proposal from the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Council.

Plans include a 400-room hotel and parking garage, five to eight restaurants and dining areas, two ballrooms, meeting rooms, a business center and a non-gaming video arcade, as well retail shops, gift stores and other outlets.

The Class 3, larger-scale casino would house 1,500 slot machines and 35 gaming tables, and the Class 2 casino would have 500 video-gaming machines with a poker room featuring 36 tables.

A bingo area, with a seating capacity of 850, would be able to be converted for use as an events center.

Tribal leaders paid $1 million for a 22-acre parcel next to the existing casino to make expansion possible.

Environmental reviews of the land will begin as soon as a complete survey of the casino property is finished.

A community referendum would have to be held in order for the tribe to gain permission to move ahead with the expansion.

But no date for such a vote has been set.

The Tribal Council said the casino and bingo operations employ 700 people and will have provided more than $9 million to the community by the end of the year.

The money, in part, pays for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Department, local health services, youth programs and educational services.

Community members and employees of both the casino and bingo palace were briefed on the plans last week, but the Tribal Council didn’t publicly announce its intentions until Thursday.

The move is an attempt to make the reservation and its gaming facilities a destination resort. The change comes at the advice of a Minnesota-based marketing firm that studied the Mohawk’s gaming operations.

Klas-Robinson has worked with many other tribal governments, including the Seneca Indian Nation.

In a news release, Tribal Council Chief Lorraine White called the expansion “a whole new era of opportunity for the tribe and surrounding communities.”

Chief Barbara Lazore added that “our gaming operations are performing at the level where we now need to take the next step and grow. It is the right time to move things forward.”

The Tribal Council will be in charge of gaming operations, but Chief James Ransom said there would be plenty of opportunities for local businesses to share in the growth.

“This is a great chance to create economic partnerships with tribal members,” he said.

“We would like them to step forward and consider implementing many of the amenities that will be associated with this expansion,” such as the restaurants, gift shops, retail space and other outlets.
