Alabama Attorney General Troy King has asked the U.S. Department of the Interior to deny a request by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians to expand their gaming operations.
The tribe, based in Atmore, asked the department in March for permission to expand operations. King said this expansion would include poker tournaments, sweepstakes, pari-mutuel wagering and alter the way it offers bingo.
"I have always been an outspoken critic of gambling and its expansion in Alabama," King said in a written statement.
King's letter, which is also a response from Gov. Bob Riley, said the request mischaracterized Alabama's gambling laws and policies. He outlines his legal arguments in a seven-page letter to the department.
"The Poarch Creek tribe understands Mr. King is running for election in November," said Mays Jemison, an attorney representing the tribe. "However, we would just like to be treated like every other federally recognized tribe in America."
The department will determine if the tribe can expand its operations.
