BIOGRAPHY

Thanks to tight choreography and finely tuned harmonies, the Temptations became Motown’s most popular male vocal group of the 1960’s. The initial five-man lineup formed in Detroit in 1961 as a merger of two vocal groups, the Primes and the Distants, but did not achieve success until recruiting tenor David Ruffin to replace one of the members and entering the studio with writer and producer Smokey Robinson. That resulted in “The Way You Do The Things You Do,” the first in a series of 37 Top Ten hits. With Robinson again producing, they returned in 1965 with their signature song, “My Girl,” adding the soulfully smooth “Since I Lost My Baby” and “Get Ready” within a year. “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” was a harder edge of soul and initiated a string of hits including “Beauty’s Only Skin Deep,” “(I Know) I’m Losing You” and “I Wish It Would Rain.” There were a number of personnel changes over the years, but the Tempts again soared to the top of the charts with the ballad “Just My Imagination” in 1971 and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” in 1973. In the 80’s, the quintet was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and appeared at the re-opening of the Apollo Theatre. In the 90’s, they released another platinum album, “Phoenix Rising.” Still electrifying audiences worldwide with suave dance moves and heavenly harmonies, the Temptations perform some of the most beloved songs of all time.
