And isn't it a hallmark of a free society that we don't outlaw otherwise inoffensive vices simply because some people harm themselves? - LA Times Editorial

The new French Lick Springs Resort Casino in Orange County is scheduled to open this Friday, but 24-Hour News 8 is giving you an early sneak peek inside.

For 150 years, French Lick has been an icon in southern Indiana. By the 1920s, it was a mecca for the rich and famous.

"Go down to Louisville for the Kentucky Derby, spend the month of May here. Then about Memorial Day they would hook those train cars back up and head off to Indianapolis to do the Indy 500," said Sandy Woodward with Historic Landmarks.

Now as a result of a $400 million renovation, you can step back to the grandeur of old. The original attraction of French Lick was the mineral springs, and the gazebo from that time still remains.

The lobby reflects the Greek and mythological motif.

"The hotel mascot was Pluto, the Greek god of the underworld and of course the springs came from underground," Woodward explained.

Beginning next week, patrons can visit restaurants, a 24,000 square foot spa, 443 guest rooms and suites, three golf courses with 45 holes of golf, a bowling alley, swimming pools, a stable, and much more.

But the big draw is not the water that flows, but the hope that money will flow during your visit to the floating casino next door.
