And They’re Off!
Kick off the Independence Day celebration a few days early this weekend when live pari-mutuel horse racing returns to the Gillespie County Fair Grounds on Saturday and Sunday.

The two-day July Fourth Racing Festival also kicks off the 2006 summer season that features eight days of live pari-mutuel horse racing over four weekends at the local five-eighths mile oval.

Sponsored by the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association, the July 4th Racing Festival will see both thoroughbred and quarter horse racing at the Class III five-eighths mile track located on Texas Highway 16 South (Kerrville Highway).

Gates open at 11 a.m. and post time is 1 p.m. daily.

After this weekend’s racing festival, ensuing events include Fredericksburg Texas Fest on July 15-16, the Gillespie County Race Meet on Aug. 12-13 and the 118th Gillespie County Fair (with racing set for Aug. 26-27 during the four-day Aug. 24-27 exposition).

Highlighting the racing program on Saturday will be the 350-yard Rio Rico Futurity Trials for which finals will be run on July 15.

On Sunday, the racing program includes the Texas Quarter Horse Association Futurity Trials. Finals for that 350-yard race will be run on July 16.

In addition to live racing, the festival also includes simulcast wagering in the fair grounds biergarten and at The Race Barn at the fair grounds entrance.

Admission to the race meet is $4 for adults, $1 for children six to 12 years of age and free for children under six.

Reserved seating at the track is available under a large covered grandstand for $7 per person.

Box seats are available in the grandstand for $9 each.

A summer season pass, which is good for all fair association-sponsored events at the fair grounds this summer, is available for $30 each.

General admission seating for the races is available in the grandstand as well as in the biergarten.

Along with kicking off their 2006 racing season, officials with the sponsoring Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association have also announced the summer concert entertainers.

Headlining the entertainment at Fredericksburg Texas Fest on Saturday, July 15, will be Charlie Robison.

Opening the show that night will be Reckless Kelly.

Admission to the Fredericksburg Texas Fest concert on Saturday night is $12.50 in advance or $15 at the gate.

Advance tickets are now on sale for the Charlie Robison concert.

Also as part of Texas Fest, a dance featuring the music of Pauline Reese will be held on Friday, July 14.

Admission to that dance is $5 for adults.

Entertainment is also planned as part of the 118th Gillespie County Fair.

Featured on Friday night, Aug. 25, will be recording artist Darrell McCall.

Admission on Friday night is $5 for adults. In keeping with tradition, school children and senior citizens are admitted free to the fair grounds on that day.

Then, on Saturday, Aug. 26, Miss Leslie and her Juke-Jointers will open for Asleep at the Wheel.

Tickets for the Asleep at the Wheel concert are $10, whether purchased in advance or at the gate.

General admission to the 118th Gillespie County Fair is $5 for adults, $1 for children six to 12 and free for children under six.

Throughout the upcoming racing and summer season, a variety of food and drink will be available.
