LITTLE ROCK, AR - A Texas businessman said Thursday he has stopped his campaign to bring a lottery and casino gambling to Arkansas. One of the casinos was planned for West Memphis across the river from Memphis.
Michael Wasserman, owner of Arkansas Resorts and Hotels Incorporated, says he'll try again in 2008.
Wasserman gave up his effort to collect 80-thousand-570 signatures necessary to get his proposal on the November ballot.
Wasserman said he decided to stop the campaign because of his sister's death from a heart attack last month.
The attorney general's office in March had certified language for Wasserman's proposed ballot title.
The proposal included building and operating casinos in Boone, Crittenden, Garland, Jefferson, Miller, Pulaski and Sebastian counties. It also would create a statewide lottery.
