The West Virginia Lottery's sales topped $130 million in August but were down about 5 percent from July's record performance.
Sales in August totaled $131.46 million, compared to $138.18 million in July, the Lottery said Wednesday.
"We have to make hay while the sun shines," marketing director Libby White said, referring to the Pennsylvania Gaming Board's approval on Wednesday of the first slot-machine licenses in that state.
Some Pennsylvania racetracks could start operating the machines as early as the end of the year.
Most of West Virginia's lottery sales come from video slots at the state's four racetracks. In August, racetrack video slots produced gross revenue of $82.3 million. Limited video lottery machines at bars, clubs and fraternal organizations generated gross revenue of $31.6 million.
The state's share of lottery profits was $54.78 million.
Lottery profits are expected to fall by about 15 percent, or more than $60 million a year, when slots at Pennsylvania's tracks are fully operational, according to state Budget Office projections.
