While crowds fight heat and traffic at the Reno/Sparks Hot August Nights car shows this weekend, Crystal Bay offers car enthusiasts a chance to check out classic cars in a more relaxed and serene setting.

The eighth annual Hot Tahoe Cruising Car show will take place at the Tahoe Biltmore and Jim Kelley's Tahoe Nugget casinos through Sunday.

This is a chance to see on display more than 100 cars and trucks of all years and makes as well as participate in many activities including a Tahoe poker run featuring drivers cruising the North Shore collecting playing cards at various restaurants.

"It's exactly like the Reno Hot August Nights except this is nicer, cooler and friendlier," said Tom Argo, executive director for Lake Tahoe's Good Samaritan Safe Ride Program which is putting on the show as a fundraiser.

"This is a great alternative (to the shows in Reno); both sides of the street are lined up with cars so people won't miss us," he said.

Cars will be on display for judging after noon on Saturday, which will be the best time to check out the cars, Argo said.

The show's awards ceremony will take place at noon on Sunday, as the "best of the best cars" will line up for award presentations.

More than 20 of the cars and trucks at the show will receive awards in such classes as best paint, best hot rod, best custom, and best of show.

Car enthusiasts will be able to purchase a $5 coin which has last year's winners of best custom and best stock car/truck on each side. The commemorative piece is a way of honoring the cars that won last year as judges look for this year's winners, said Argo.

Nicole Garci-Aguirre of the Tahoe Biltmore pointed out that the vendors and cars aren't the only reason to come to the Hot Tahoe Cruisin' Car and Truck Show.

"Not only do we have the beauty of the classic cars and the beauty of the lake, we don't have the crowds," she said. "And you can actually park where the event is."

Other events going on nightly at the Biltmore and Nugget casinos in Crystal Bay will be a '50s dress-up and dance contest in the Tahoe Biltmore's Breeze Nightclub between 7:30 and 9 p.m. Saturday.

There will also be a special appearance by Lil' Mike and the Casinos inside the Breeze Nightclub from 9 to midnight every night through Saturday.

"The majority of people that have cars here are easy going and they're friendly," said Karl Clark, who has been attending this event for the past eight years. "They like talking about cars; it doesn't matter if they have a $60,000 car or a $15 car, they are good people."

The Hot Tahoe Cruisin' Car and Truck Show is an annual fundraiser for the Lake Tahoe's Good Samaritan Safe Ride Program, a South Lake Tahoe program which provides free taxi rides to those who are intoxicated. Program organizers said they are trying to start a similar service on the North Shore.
