Federal marshals over the weekend nabbed a man in San Antonio charged in connection with an allegedly illegal gambling ring in Austin.
Mike Cassiano, 30, appeared Monday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Pamela Mathy, who ordered him held without bond pending a bail hearing in Austin within two weeks.
Cassiano, of Austin, is one of 15 people charged in a May 16 federal indictment with illegal gambling and conspiracy to launder money.
Another 19 people were charged in the state system, authorities said.
The ring, authorities said, used eight-liners and promised cash payouts.
In July 2005, Austin police, the Department of Public Safety, the FBI, the Internal Revenue Service and Travis County authorities executed 70 search warrants at game rooms and convenience stores in the Austin area, the Austin Police Department said in a May 23 news release.
Further investigation showed $15 million went through the organization in a 21/2-year period and that $1.8 million was seized during the raids, the release said.
Many of the proceeds were sent to Pakistan, a federal indictment alleges.
