There are serious concerns in Sedgwick County that the dozens of bingo games that are played weekly could be put out of business if voters say yes to a casino. On August 7, voters will go to the polls to approve slot machines at the Greyhound Park and a destination casino for the county.
Kansas only gives bingo licenses to nonprofit organizations. Many of those rely on bingo to bring in the bucks. In Wichita there are currently 59 organizations with bingo licenses. Topeka only has 12 and Kansas City has just 7. Both cities have casinos nearby.
Positive Directions provides assistance to those living with HIV and Aids. It runs bingo twice a week and the revenue, $90,000, makes up almost one-fifth of its budget. |
