Billboards Advertising Free Sports Gambling Causing Controversy

September 15, 2006 - All over the country you will find billboards advertising an online sportsbook and it may make you wonder what the heck is going on in this country that makes this allowed. Isn't online sports gambling illegal? you may ask. Well, in the US, yes it is.

One offshore sportsbook in particular seems to like the attention, though, as they are putting up billboards in main cities around the country. They are advertising a free brand of their .com sportsbook. The website they are advertising is BetUS.net and they just put up billboards in Boston featuring a slogan about the Patriots and a photo of Tom Brady in a Patriots uniform.

There may be some kind of infringement on the team's logo, but the sportsbook claims because it is advertising their .net version, which offers free money simulated betting, they are not breaking any US laws.

Whether they are breaking the law or not, the billboards are bringing much unwanted exposure to the US gaming industry. The DoJ and US politicians may have ignored the situation before, to a certain extent, but now the issues of offshore gaming are being quite literally thrown in their faces.

The billboards, along with the high profile arrests over the past several months, will most certainly bring the debate over issues of online gambling in the US to a pinnacle and something soon must break.
