Boomtown Casino is asking the city of Biloxi for permission to turn what had been a city block of homes before Hurricane Katrina into a parking lot.
The area is from Bayview Avenue south to Elder Street between Lameuse Street and Main Street.
The casino wants to consolidate its parking and add more space to accommodate its growing business, said Chett Harrison, director of marketing for Boomtown. On Aug. 28, the casino will add about 400 slots and an eight-table poker room, and open its Overland Cafe.
Boomtown plans to do more than just lay asphalt for the parking lot, he said.
"It's going to look real nice," Harrison said. "The city of Biloxi requires a lot of standards for parking and spaces you have out front. Our parking lot is landscaped very nicely. This will be as well. It will have a nice fence and it will be landscaped. It will certainly lift up this part of the community."
MTB Transportation Inc., a company affiliated with Boomtown, bought several parcels and is asking that the city rezone the land from single-family residential use to general business use. The Biloxi Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the request at 2 p.m. Sept. 7.
Boomtown is the only Coast casino without a hotel. Harrison said Penn National Gaming, the casino's parent company, has not announced long-term plans for its Biloxi property.
"At the moment, their goal in this region is to get us fully open and get the Hollywood Casino open over in Bay St. Louis," Harrison said.
