Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer is bringing the talented California-based Hystericalady east to head a field of eight 3-year-old fillies entered in Saturday's $500,000 Grade II Delaware Oaks at Delaware Park.
Hystericalady, coming off a 7 1/2-length win in the $150,000 Grade II Hollywood Breeders Cup Oaks on June 11, is the 2-1 morning line favorite in the 1 1/16-mile stake.
Veteran Pat Valenzuela will also come in from California to ride Hystericalady, who has won two of three starts this year.
Hollendorfer, who shipped Hystericalady to Delaware Park on Tuesday, has two key reasons for bringing his prize filly to the East Coast.
"We want to see how she will handle a little bit deeper track," Hollendorfer said. "Another reason is the availability of races. For example, most of the rest of the stake races for 3-year-olds, especially at the beginning of the Del Mar meet and the end of the Hollywood meet, are on the turf. And we did not want to put her on the turf yet."
The two New York shippers to watch are Last Romance, the early second choice at 3-1, and the Todd Pletcher-trained Adieu at 4-1. Ramon Dominguez is named to ride Last Romance for trainer Richard Dutrow Jr., and John Velazquez has the call on Adieu.
The local favorite to watch is Susan Knoll's Gasia, trained by J. Larry Jones. Gasia, stabled at Delaware Park, won the $175,000 Susan's Girl Breeders Cup at the Stanton track June 17. She is 6-1 with Mario Pino aboard.
Fleet Indian, runaway winner of the $100,000 Obeah last month at Delaware Park, is expected to be one of two Pletcher-trained mares to enter Sunday's Grade II $1 million Delaware Handicap when the draw is held today. As many as 10 fillies and mares could challenge the 1 1/4-mile classic distance in the track's premiere race of the meet.
Pletcher has the mare to beat, defending champion Honey Ryder, in a field of nine fillies and mares entered in Saturday's $300,000 Robert G. Dick Memorial Breeders Cup. Honey Ryder won last year's 1 3/8-mile grass test by 5 1/2 lengths as the 4-5 betting favorite. She is Saturday's 6-5 morning line favorite with Velazquez up.
Honey Ryder, with five wins in seven career starts, won the $150,000 Grade II Sheepshead Bay Handicap at Belmont Park on May 27.
Phipps Stable's Survivalist, trained by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey, will ship in from New York as the 5-2 morning line favorite in Saturday's $100,000 R.R.M. Carpenter Jr. Memorial at 1 1/16 miles. Dominguez has the mount. M B Sea, with Velazquez, is the early 7-2 second choice.
