Cape Cod tribe acquiring more land for possible casino

MIDDLEBOROUGH - A Cape Cod tribe that wants to open a casino resort in Massachusetts is buying more land in Middleborough.

The Mashpee Wampanoag are picking up an option to buy another 205 acres in the town, according to tribal spokeswoman Amy Lambiaso.

The tribe and its financial backers already own 125 acres outright in the community south of Boston and have options on another 201 acres.

Tuesday’s announcement boosts the tribe’s total land holdings to 531 acres. The resort facility would take up about 100 acres with the rest of the land used as a buffer.

The deal is expected to be the final land deal in Middleborough, according to Lambiaso.

Middleborough residents approved a contract with the tribe last month that would pay the town $11 million a year, as well as $250 million for infrastructure improvements.

The Legislature still needs to approve expanded gambling in Massachusetts before a full-scale casino can be built.
