Authorities Say Machines Taken After Undercover Investigation

MILFORD, N.H. -- Investigators said they seized tens of thousands of dollars and several illegal video poker machines at a Milford Veterans of Foreign Wars hall over the weekend.

Authorities said the seizures were the result of an undercover investigation. Five video poker machines were seized, and investigators said the machines were being used for gambling, rather than just for entertainment.

"The allegation is that after a lengthy investigation, the Milford VFW and some of their agents were paying off on the poker machines," said Kyle Metcalf of the New Hampshire Liquor Commission. "We executed a search warrant and seized the machines and a large amount of currency."

Investigators said $32,000 in cash, most of it in $10 and $20 bills, was taken during the raid. Authorities said the money is the proceeds from the poker machines, which they said could generate between $5,000 and $10,000 a week.

No criminal charges have been filed, but authorities said it is still an active case led by the liquor commission, the Milford Police Department and the attorney general's office.

Authorities would not comment about the length of the investigation, but they said this type of gambling is a big problem in the state.

"Unfortunately, we get a lot of complaints that a spouse, a boyfriend, a girlfriend are losing a considerable amount of money through their paychecks or whatever means," Metcalf said. "They're supporting a family, so unfortunately, it does appear to be a major problem in New Hampshire."

Investigators said they expect criminal charges will eventually be filed.
