Casino gambling proposal delayed for a week

FRANKFORT - A proposal in the General Assembly to allow expanded gambling in Kentucky was delayed another week, reducing the likelihood that such a measure will be approved this year, several key lawmakers said.
The horse industry and other casino gambling proponents have been working on a compromise proposal for more than two weeks.
The Kentucky Equine Education Project, led by former Democratic Gov. Brereton Jones, has pushed for a constitutional amendment that would allow casino games at eight horse tracks.
Sen. David Boswell, D-Owensboro, also is pushing for freestanding casinos at four other sites, including in his hometown.
A compromise measure was scheduled to be unveiled at a House licensing and occupations committee meeting this morning. But its chairman, Denver Butler, a Louisville Democrat, said no agreement had been reached.
He said lawmakers will try again for next Wednesday's meeting and he told reporters later that it's unlikely any gambling bill will have a chance to reach the House floor if it doesn't get out of his committee by next week. |
