Season of Dreams
Date: Tuesday - Mar 04, 2008
Time: 7:30 PM
Location: Show Lounge

Details

Season of Dreams is a feature-length documentary that explores Saskatchewan's love affair with football using the 2006 season as a backdrop. The film takes a unique behind-the-scenes look at a rural six-man high school football team, the Hague Panthers, and an urban twelve-man high school team, the Holy Cross Crusaders, as they prepare and ultimately play out their own 'season of dreams.'

Threaded throughout the film are compelling exclusive interviews with Saskatchewan football legends such as George Reed, Ron Lancaster, Ron Atchison, Gord Currie and Roger Aldag. Several well known sports broadcasters such as Glen Suitor, Chris Cuthbert, Brian Williams, Chris Walby, and Steve Armitage are also featured.

This Five Stones Film Production captivates the audience with a real-life look at football in Saskatchewan from the six and nine man leagues in the rural areas right up to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The film became an up-close and personal look at some of the players, the coaches, the fans, and even the families of those involved in the sport of football in this province. It provided a glimpse into the love affair Saskatchewan has for football and why the sport plays such an important role in our lives.

If you love football and you love Saskatchewan, you won't want to miss Season of Dreams!

Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers
Date: Friday - Mar 07, 2008
Time: 8:00 PM
Location: Show Lounge

Details

Newfoundland music/comedy –It was 1983 when, Ray Johnson and Wayne Chaulk met Kevin Blackmore (aka Buddy Wasisname). The reason the three got together was to do what comes so natural to musicians - to play and sing for the pleasure of it. When Ray was asked to do a 10 day run at the Newfoundland Pavilion of the Toronto Caravan Series in the summer of '84 he elected to do so only with his two musical buddies. By 1987 they abandoned all previous occupations and "went at it!" full time. Having completed near eleven full time years, they've toured throughout Canada and released 16 albums.

Wayne found his ultimate love in writing and performing original Newfoundland songs with a traditional feel. Kevin is now known as the funniest man in Newfoundland and his portrayal of cultural caricatures regularly reduces his audiences to tears, literally cracking them up. His weapons are song, dialogue and facial contortion. He is as hilarious in his singing mode as he is in his stand-up routine. His banter with The Other Fellers on stage has developed into the style of an old-fashioned concert. Ray has developed into the ultimate accordion player and singer and is also now a reluctant comedian of considerable ability.

Songs: Sarah, Saltwater Joys, Is You 'Appy?, Chainsaw Earle, Goin' Up with Brudder, The Pits & Song for Newfoundland

Quartette featuring: Cindy Church, Caitlin Hanford, Gwen Swick & Sylvia Tyson
Date: Saturday - Mar 08, 2008
Time: 8:00 PM
Location: Show Lounge

Details

Since their debut in 1993, the four members of Quartette have been both publicly and critically acclaimed for their lush harmonies and delightfully diverse repertoire. Cindy Church, Caitlin Hanford, Gwen Swick & Sylvia Tyson are seasoned singer/songwriters whose influences range from blues and gospel to folk and country to jazz and pop.

The group’s first appearance, a showcase of Canadian women songwriters, took place at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre. What began as a “songwriter in the round” concert of musical friends grew into an inspired collaboration. This initial performance generated an appearance on CBC Radio’s Morningside with host Peter Gzowski. The phones began to ring with requests for a recording, and seven months later in April of 1994, the self-titled album, Quartette, was released to rave reviews. This was followed by coast-to-coast tours of theatres, folk festivals, performances with symphony orchestras and live appearances on radio.

With the untimely death of original member, Colleen Peterson, in 1996, Quartette elected to continue performing, and welcomed another musical friend, Gwen Swick, to the group. Gwen’s skills as a songwriter and vocal arranger carried the group to a new level as they prepared to record once again, and the result was In The Beauty Of The Day, released in 1998.

Quartette have received several Juno nominations and won a Canadian Country Music Award for best vocal collaboration. In October 2007, they released their sixth recording, Down At The Fair, produced by legendary guitarist, arranger and producer Colin Linden.

Songs: Down at the Fair, I Don't Want to Cry, Runaway Heart, No Place Like Home & The Circle

Jo-El Sonnier & Donny Parenteau
Date: Saturday - Mar 15, 2008
Time: 8:00 PM
Location: Show Lounge

Details

Jo-El Sonnier & Donny Parenteau performing together on stage in a Mardi gras performance.

Jo-El Sonnier – Jo-El has been the undisputed "King of Cajun" for the past 20 years. Born in Rayne, Louisiana, Jo-El began to play accordion at three years of age. News of this gifted, French-singing child led to his first recording session by age 11.
Sonnier nearly gave up the accordion when he received a break from Merle Haggard, who sought Sonnier as his opening act on the road. By 1984, Sonnier had a Grammy nominated recording to his credit with Cajun Life. This success provided the freedom to fuse Sonnier's deep Cajun roots with country, rock, and pop influences. As a songwriter, Jo-El has penned songs recorded by artists such as Johnny Cash, George Strait, & Jerry Lee Lewis. In 1995, Sonnier was awarded ‘Male Vocalist of the Year & ‘Song of the Year’ by the Cajun French Music Association. His 1997 release Cajun Pride was nominated for a Grammy in the ‘Best Traditional Folk Album’ category. In 1999 Jo-El made a dream come true by performing on The Grand Ole Opry.
Songs: Tear Stained Letter, Come On Joe, No More One More Time & Rainin'

Donny Parenteau –Born and raised in Prince Albert, Donny raised a bow to the fiddle in 1981. He expanded his musical versatility to also playing the mandolin, acoustic & electric guitar and double neck mando-caster/electric guitar. With his superior vocal ability added to the mix, and easy transition from country classics to blues to easy rock, Donny hit the touring road in 1991 with country music great, Neal McCoy. Donny’s 12-year adventure with Neal McCoy had him sharing the stage with country legends.
In 2006, Donny’s third CD, What It Takes launched to tremendous Canadian and US appeal and music reviews. In 2007, with an unprecedented 18 Music Nominations to his credit from April to December 2007, Donny was the highest nominated musician of any musical genre in Canada over a 9 month period. In 2007, Donny won two Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards.

Williams & Ree
Date: Friday - Mar 21, 2008
Time: 8:00 PM
Location: Show Lounge

Details

America's favorite music and comedy duo Bruce Williams & Terry Ree, often referred to as "The Indian and the White Guy," have sustained a career over 30 years with their ever-changing routine that - more times than not - steers away from the off-color Indian jokes that originally established the duo. Williams and Ree met in 1968 at Black Hills State College in Spearfish, South Dakota where they began playing together in a band where they often filled time between their songs with their unique brand of humor. After realizing that the humor became a bigger draw than the music, the comedy team was born.

They have since shared the stage with acts such as Garth Brooks, The Oak Ridge Boys & Tim McGraw in addition to hosting Country Kitchen with Florence Henderson, a show that entertained audiences for over 10 years.

By combining pop culture trends into a fast-paced, lively show, full of zings interspersed with songs, Williams and Ree prove they have what it takes to get an audience going. This winning combo has allowed Williams and Ree to entertain thousands, performing over 300 shows every year. Their comedy albums include Indian Casino Royale & Taking Reservations.

Earl Thomas Conley
Date: Saturday - Mar 22, 2008
Time: 8:00 PM
Location: Show Lounge

Details

Having written continuously since 1968 and hot on the heels of a #1 cut for Conway Twitty (This Time I've Hurt Her More Than She Love Me), Earl decided to make the move to "singer" as Earl Conley. In 1979, Earl released three singles for Warner Brothers, which failed to crack the Top 20 country chart. By 1982, the artist now known as Earl Thomas Conley recorded the Blue Pearl featuring the #1 single Fire & Smoke. What ensued was a period of hit making that has seldom been achieved by other artists in any genre of music. This became more interesting when considering the type of music that Earl Thomas Conley was making. He was country, R&B, rock n' roll, pop, and adult contemporary in a world that accepted nothing but stone country.

His incessant desire to grow musically led to accolades such as multiple Grammy nominations for his 1983 hit Holding Her & Loving You, which won the ‘Country Song of the Year’ award. Earl became the first and only country artist ever to appear on the popular R&B television show ‘Soul Train,’ where he sang his 1986 hit duet with Anita Pointer of the Pointer Sisters, Too Many Times.

In 1991, Earl took a break, which led to seven year hiatus from the studio. With longtime friends Randy Scruggs and Curly Corwin in tow, Earl stood behind the mic, rediscovering his voice with every note. The confines of the studio were fun again and by 1998, the team emerged with Perpetual Emotion, a ten track offering containing five new songs co-written by Conley and five newly-recorded versions of Earl's most popular #1 hits.

Songs: Fire and Smoke, Somewhere Between Right and Wrong, I Have Loved You Girl (But Not Like This Before), Your Love's on the Line, Holding Her and Loving You, Don't Make It Easy For Me, Chance of Lovin' You, Nobody Falls Like a Fool, I Can't Win For Losin' You & What I'd Say
