Casino Rock Island pitches new design next week

By Jenny Lee, jlee@qconline.com

The Casino Rock Island will ask the Illinois Gaming Board next week to approve an amended design of its new $150 million complex, but the request won't be the last hurdle before workers break ground, said Bill Renk, the casino's vice president of sales and marketing.

The Gaming Board will review the design for the new casino's exterior on Monday and Tuesday, Mr. Renk said. The board also will be asked to waive the requirement to have two meetings to approve the design, so a decision can be made at once.

The board also will discuss renewing the casino's license at the meeting, according to the meeting agenda. The gaming board will look at performance, compliance and finances before approving the re-licensing, Mr. Renk said, adding that the last time the casino was up for re-licensing was four years ago.

Board spokesman Gene O'Shea said all decisions are up to the board on whether the casino needs approval for other aspects of the project.

Casino Rock Island still plans to build a 200-room hotel, 600-seat theater/conference hall and a parking deck at the intersection of Interstate 280 and Ill. 92.

The previous design for the complex was a Bavarian-style theme, but the new design is more contemporary, Mr. Renk said. The casino won't reveal the altered plans until workers break ground on the complex.

Mr. Renk said he couldn't say when the groundbreaking will be, but it could happen in the coming months.

On Tuesday, Casino Rock Island will present the new design for a limited time on video, Mr. Renk said. The video is not for public consumption, nor will the casino release it, he said.

The board will have a closed session meeting on Monday and have open and closed sessions on Tuesday, according to the board's Web site.

Workers are installing utilities at the site, Mr. Renk said.

"It's really a step-by-step process," Mr. Renk said. "We're almost there."

He said the financing for the project is in place. Depending on Tuesday's decision, the casino hopes to move forward on the architecture of the interior.

Mr. O'Shea repeated that it's up to the board on whether the casino needs approval for financing.
