Casino boats sue Horry County

The casino boat companies that operate out of Little River have sued Horry County over a recently passed tax.
Under the tax, passed in June, SunCruz Casinos and Diamond Gaming would have to make their first payment Monday of 5 percent of their ticket revenues and 1.4 percent of gross proceeds.
The companies are asking for an injunction to allow them not to pay the taxes until the issues in the lawsuit are settled.
The lawsuit alleges that the County Council did not have the proper authority under federal law to pass such a tax. Even if the tax were legal, the suit alleges the County Council did not follow its own rules of procedure, and, therefore, the law should be void.
Horry County will not fight the injunction, county spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier said. |
