In addition, General Manager Joe Massa reported today that the resort also met the projections for January, taking in $6,454,000. "We are very pleased," Massa said. "We had some tough weather there, but that is winter in Iowa for you. We have to expect that. We don't like it, but we expect it." He said that of the revenues the resort takes in, the State of Iowa gets about 22 percent in sales tax, while Washington County gets one-half of one percent. For the $6.3 million month, Washington County received just over $30,000. Massa is optimistic that the resort is well on its way to meeting the $7 million plus projection for March. As the weather gets warmer, Massa expects more customers to visit the casino. "We are going to make it," he said. Massa also commented on a bill in the Iowa Legislature right now that would remove the requirement for a casino to be housed on water. The "water feature" doesn't have to be naturally occurring. When the resort was built, it was placed on a large bladder full of water under the gambling floors to meet the state requirements. "It cost quite a bit to put that in, but those were the requirements," Massa said. "We are just fine with the legislation." A bill that would do away with the requirement passed the Iowa Senate 46-3 and no opposition has emerged in the House. A final vote on the issue is expected next month. The Iowa Gaming Association proposed the legislation.
