Casino cash down for municipalities
The Town of Gananoque and Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands are splitting $916,851 in revenue from the Thousand Islands Charity Casino.
That's the payment from the period of April to June, based on the agreement that host municipalities receive five per cent of slot-machine revenue from facilities operated by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation.
The municipalities' take for this three-month period is down 7.6 per cent from what it was the same time last year.
Teresa Roncon, an official with the gaming agency, downplayed the effect the provincial smoking ban, which took effect on May 31, had on casino revenue.
Roncon noted that the Gananoque casino historically attracts a good deal of American customers, and the high Canadian dollar, gas prices and stringent controls at border crossings could be discouraging cross-border travel.
The agency, which operates at arm's length from the provincial government, issued more than $18 million in gaming revenue to host municipalities across the province for the recently completed quarter. Roncon said that's up more than six per cent from the same time last year. |
