Casino cash will pay for kids' textbooks

FRENCH LICK, Ind. -- Parents are reaping a new kind of casino payout -- money generated from the French Lick Resort and Casino is being used to cover the cost of textbook rentals.
Paoli Community Schools Superintendent Alva Sibbitt said the program will save parents $70 to $100 per student. Parents are glad the casino money will be used to pay the tab.
"I'm excited about it," said Neva Stroud, of Orleans. "I have two kids in school, and usually it would be about $225 out of our pockets, and in August we get to keep it in our pockets."
Money generated through the casino's adjusted gross receipts will also be used to offset book rental fees in the Orleans and Springs Valley school districts.
The plan to use casino-generated revenue for textbooks was announced in June 2004, before construction began on a casino in French Lick.
The Orange County Community Foundation oversees the program. Foundation director Imojean Dedrick said she is hopeful that funding for textbook rentals will continue beyond this year.
Some parents are just happy to have a break as the new school year approaches.
"It made my day," said Julie Osborn. "I have four children. It's over $300 for textbooks for me each year."
