The 42-year-old woman at the centre of a Gambling Commission hearing lost an average of $30,000 a month at a casino the year before she was arrested for stealing to fuel her addiction.

In a landmark hearing, the Department of Internal Affairs is attempting to suspend Dunedin Casino's licence for failing to identify a problem gambler.

Christine Keenan spent more than $6 million over three years at the Dunedin Casino.

The casino's gambling inspector, Dermot Harris, told the hearing today management at the casino had approached Ms Keenan about her large spending – turning over $352,000 in March 2004 – a month in which she lost $29,000.

Mr Harris said Ms Keenan became aware she was being traced and stopped using her casino cards.

Mr Harris said without using her card the figures showing her turnover in 2004 suggested she was moderating her gambling.

Department of Internal affairs lawyer Mark Woolford said the true extent of her gambling was not being reflected on the casino's records.

Mr Woolford asked Mr Harris if anyone had approached Ms Keenan to offer her help. Mr Harris said she knew management was watching her and she knew the gambling hotline number "off by heart".

The hearing was told yesterday Ms Keenan sold her house, used money from her marriage settlement, spent her inheritance, and stole from her employer to fund her gambling.

Ms Keenan was arrested as she left the casino in August 2004 for 11 counts of theft and was jailed for three years.

The hearing is set down for three days. The casino could be suspended for up to six months.
