Casino developer asks to drop Hill District commitment
Last Update: 6:33 am

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The developer of the Majestic Star slots parlor in Pittsburgh wants to pull out of a commitment to give $3 million to help revitalize the city's Hill District.

That's according to papers filed with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

Don Barden's company, PITG Gaming LLC, originally offered the money in 2006 as part of a bid to win the Pittsburgh slots license.

But officials in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County have since given the Pittsburgh Penguins the authority to develop land in the Hill District, once the hockey team's new arena is built.

Hill District representatives say they are disappointed by Barden's decision, but understand why he's reluctant to commit money to the area.

Barden hopes to open the slots parlor about a year from now.
